New Music Tuesdays Vol 4

by Jason Rossi 28. July 2009 11:39
Today is Tuesday (I swear, check your calendars) and that means I will be diving into the topic of new music on Radio 929. Today we have the latest from one of the grunge originators, a band that been on top of the charts for three decades, and a collaboration that will leave you feeling dirty.

Pearl Jam – The Fixer: With the opening cords sounding like the opening of Rescue Me theme song (The Von Bondies “C’mon C’mon, that reminds me that’s on tonight, sweet!) you know the song is going to keep you bouncing  and bobbing your head. Although I cant make out 90% of what Eddie Vedder is spiting out (its been that way since I first heard Pearl Jam), the catchy riffs, melody, and short length (2:58ish) makes this a perfect jam pun intended. I don’t know what they are trying to fix, but this easily goes to the top of my Pearl Jam “listen-to-able” tracks.

U2 – I’ll Go Crazy, If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight; now is this U2’s latest great rock ballad? By definition of lastest… YES but the answer is NO by execution. Crazy does have that U2 vibe with the Edges patented sound, but as that Fall Out Boy Esq title (ex: “I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me”) What with the Egyptian sounding sitar in the middle and the end of the song? I am a big U2 fan but this is just another average song off an overall average album. Also the video is well…. Equally average.

Also I would love to know what Bono says in the beginning of the chorus my guess is “It’s not here it’s a mountain” and don’t go looking up the lyrics.

Lastly check out Jet with Iggy Pop (how gross is this guy?) covering Wild One, this totally rocks!

Rock of a Quarter Century

by Jason Rossi 23. July 2009 11:31

If you’re a true music fan and/or historian these are shows you must see. Check out this 25th anniversary concert celebration of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

These are not my words

“THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME IS ORGANIZING A TWO-DAY CONCERT EVENT TO CELEBRATE ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY:
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, METALLICA, ARETHA FRANKLIN and U2 are among the artists that have signed on to perform at a two-day concert event, which will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the rock and roll hall of fame.

It's happening at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Thursday, October 29th and Friday, October 30th.  Each night will feature a different line-up . . . so basically, it'll be like your typical music festival . . . only with some HUGE artists.

Thursday's bill already includes:  Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon,Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Friends, and Stevie Wonder.

And for Friday, they have already booked:  Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Metallica and U2.

Also, TOM HANKS and director CAMERON CROWE are serving on the, quote, "creative team" for the event, whatever that entails.

Tickets go on sale August 3rd.”

I’m drooling at the thought of this show, but I will whip my face clean and bring up the topic of who would you like to see get into the Hall of Fame?

Green Day, 21 Boston, Jailbait, & Flashing Blue Lights

by Jason Rossi 21. July 2009 12:56
Last Nights Green Day/Bravery show can be summed up in two words; ARENA ROCK!!

Green Day came out on a mission to make sure there was not one person who left the sold out TD Garden (what happened to the bank?) without feeling they just saw a genuine rock show.  Green Day played several new songs off 21st Century Breakdown which included the title track, Know Your Enemy, Static Age, East Jesus Nowhere which had a cameo by the now famous Henry (kid pulled on stage after Billie Joe screamed for an adult to give him their child… in a non creepy way). Green Day also put together one heck of a medley that included King for a Day, Shout, I’ll Be There, & Stand By Me.

There is nothing like seeing a 90’s band that is still at it, with numerous songs you know. Green Day had me and the rest of the Garrrden bouncing for 2 & ½ hours. Openers the Bravery who I was really excited to take a big stage didn’t disappoint either. They brought there New York swagger and slick guitar and synth riffs.

Here are some of the negatives of the night. Green Day definitely captured the arena rock, but over killed the “Hey OOOOOOOOOOOOO” and they mentioned Boston and or Massachusetts 21 times (fitting with their latest singles 21 Guns). Also mass chaos broke out when Billie Joe ask for several hundred people to come to the floor. That was awesome for those who got let onto the floor, it wasn’t awesome when the aisle were packed of fans wanting to get there.  The guy sitting in front of me let these three (lets just say attractive… is that politically correct?) underage girls sit in front of me. So I had the every so often “good view” as these girls also came to rock!

After the show ended I was driving (while listening to the Radio 929 encore which featured Green Day songs for the ride home), and was pulled over. The Cop pulled up next to him and told me if I was going to drive like an (American) idiot I shouldn’t do so near a Police car.  He ended with a great quote “Here is a little piece of advice… use your head” then he drove off.

Here is last night’s set list-

Rock Quote of the Day

Actually, we're a complete fraud. We
can't sing, play or write songs, we get
other people to do it for us. We also
pay radio stations lots
of money to tell kids to buy our
records and wear clothes like us.
-Eddie Vedder
